Julian is a general civil and commercial litigator. He has a broad practise focus. A lot of the work he does involves contractual disputes in one form or another, the Commerce Act, the Fair Trading Act, with the odd tort thrown in for good measure. He doesn’t limit himself: He's done shareholder and director disputes, trust matters, insurance issues, defamation, maritime, lease, construction, property, and professional discipline issues. He also does a bit of administrative law and judicial review work. He enjoys doing different things.
Julian started his career in 1993 with Russell McVeagh. In 2002, he established LeeSalmonLong (a specialist disputes firm). He joined the independent bar at the start of 2017.
Julian did his post graduate studies at Oxford University, where he enjoyed being taught by wonderful people like Colin Tapper, Adrian Zuckerman, Francis Reynolds, Adrian Briggs, and Roy Goode. He presented on legal topics from time to time, and when he did that, he was told he can be quite entertaining. Julian has appeared before all New Zealand courts in a wide range of disputes, and he also does both international and domestic arbitration work. He has aspirations to be an arbitrator himself.
Julian has taught the Civil Procedure elective at Auckland University since 2018. He likes to think that by his efforts there “tomorrows lawyers” will be better, faster and stronger than many of the present profession. Embrace change or die.
